When to Stop Fertilizing Warm-Season Grass (The Six-Week Rule Has the Wrong Anchor)

It’s Labor Day weekend. The lawn looks the best it’s looked all year. There’s most of a bag of fertilizer sitting in the garage, the grass is still growing hard enough that you’re mowing twice a week, and it feels wasteful to stop now.

So you put down one more application this month. Maybe a light one in early October, because it’s still 85 degrees and nothing about the lawn says winter.

That’s the application that costs you next April.

The Short Answer

In Georgia and most of the warm-season South, the last nitrogen of the year goes down in late August. Not October. If you haven’t done it yet, this weekend is the cutoff, and the rest of this article is why the rule you’ve probably heard points you a month too late.

Why This Matters

The rule everyone repeats is “stop nitrogen six weeks before your first frost.”

That rule is real and it came from a university. NC State’s spring dead spot guidance says don’t apply nitrogen within six weeks of winter dormancy. Somewhere between there and your search results, dormancy turned into frost.

Those are not the same date. Warm-season grass in the Georgia Piedmont starts shutting down well before the first freeze. It slows as soil cools, weeks ahead of anything you’d call frost. The National Weather Service puts Atlanta’s average first freeze around November 13. Six weeks back from that is October 2, and by October 2 your zoysia has been winding down for a month.

Compare that to what the extension calendars actually say. Clemson wants St. Augustine’s last nitrogen before August 15. NC State’s zoysia calendar puts the last application in mid-August and then says no nitrogen in fall. UGA caps anything after mid-September at half a pound per 1,000 square feet.

Every one of those lands in August. The six-week rule lands in October. The rule isn’t wrong. It’s measured from the wrong end.

Why It Happens

Two things break when nitrogen goes down late, and only one of them is about cold.

Cold hardiness. Nitrogen tells the plant to build leaf tissue. New tissue is soft and full of water, and it ruptures at the first hard frost. You enter winter with a thinner stand than you should have.

Disease. This is the one that gets skipped, and in the Southeast it fires first.

Spring dead spot, the worst thing that happens to bermuda in the transition zone, infects in fall once soil temperature drops below 70°F, and keeps infecting while it stays above 50°F. UGA puts the start of that window in Georgia at late September to early October. Large patch, which hits zoysia, centipede, and St. Augustine hardest, infects when the thatch layer sits between 50 and 70°F with sustained moisture. Both are worsened by excess late nitrogen. Neither is caused by it. Drainage, thatch, and moisture matter more, but nitrogen timing is the input you actually control.

Both diseases do their damage in fall while the grass is going dormant and not growing, so you see nothing at the time. The lawn browns out for winter looking fine, then greens up in April with dead circles in it, and October is the last place you’d think to look.

Run the six-week rule off frost and your last nitrogen lands on October 2, inside that infection window, not ahead of it.

When to Do It

Frost is the wrong anchor. Soil temperature is the right one, and it’s free to check.

The real trigger: your last nitrogen goes down at least four weeks before 4-inch soil temperature starts its sustained decline through 70°F. In north Georgia that decline hits in early October, which puts the last application in late August. You don’t need a thermometer. If you won’t check soil temp: count back twelve weeks from your average first frost. For Atlanta’s November 13, that’s August 21. And regardless of what the math says, don’t go past Labor Day. Anywhere.

That last cap matters more the further south you are, which is the opposite of what you’d expect. On the Gulf Coast, first frost runs into mid-December. Count back twelve weeks and you get early October, which is deep inside the large patch window. Clemson tells coastal readers to stop by September 1. The colder your winter, the better the frost math works. The milder it is, the more the frost anchor lies to you.

By Grass Type

Most late applications are people trying to hit an annual number they shouldn’t have been aiming for in the first place.

Centipede’s numbers aren’t a typo. Clemson is blunt: more than two pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per year “may be harmful to the centipede turf by creating excessive thatch and increasing the chance of turfgrass disease.” There’s a named failure mode, centipedegrass decline, and the cause is treating centipede like bermuda. Your Options

Stopping nitrogen doesn’t end the fertilizer year. It changes the nutrient.

Potassium is the one nutrient that helps a plant survive cold rather than grow. Clemson’s prescription for warm-season lawns: 1 pound of K₂O per 1,000 square feet, four to six weeks before your first expected frost. That’s late September into mid-October for most of Georgia, comfortably after the nitrogen has stopped.

One honest caveat, because the site would be worse without it. UGA says fall potassium “can be helpful” for winter hardiness and may reduce spring dead spot severity. NC State ran the same test and reported fall potassium had no effect on the disease in their research. The cold-hardiness case is solid. The disease case is a maybe. Potash is cheap enough that the maybe is worth buying, but don’t let anyone sell it to you as a fungicide.

Both sources also say the rate should come off a soil test, not off an article. Mine included.

The Frugal Fix

Potassium is a commodity mineral. There’s no proprietary chemistry to pay for, which makes this one of the clean cases where cheapest is right.

Tier 1 — Cheapest (The Nut). Bulk muriate of potash, 0-0-60, from a farm co-op or ag supplier. At commodity pricing this runs roughly $0.42 per pound of K₂O, about a third of consumer-bag pricing. Apply 1.6 lb of product per 1,000 sq ft and water it in. MOP carries chloride and has a salt index around 116, so keep it granular, keep it watered in, and keep it out of your sprayer.

Tier 2 — Middle (The Rationalist). Bagged sulfate of potash, 0-0-50. Chloride-free, salt index around 46, much more forgiving if your watering is imperfect. Apply 2 lb per 1,000 sq ft. Runs about $1.30 per pound of K₂O, roughly triple Tier 1, and the right call if you have chloride-sensitive turf.

Tier 3 — there isn’t one, and that’s worth saying. Straight potash isn’t a big-box product. Your Home Depot has fifteen nitrogen blends and no 0-0-50. If you want this in one bag with no ordering, the honest answer is that you’ll be ordering it online either way, so buy the Tier 2 SOP and skip the search.

Spread it with a mid-tier broadcast spreader, $80 to $160, an Echo RB-60 or equivalent. Not the $30 plastic-wheel unit. Potash is a salt, and an uneven pattern means burn where it doubled up. The spreader guide covers why the cheap one is worse, not just cheaper.

What Not to Do

Don’t buy a “winterizer” without reading the first number. Winterizers are formulated for cool-season lawns, where heavy fall nitrogen is correct. Most of those bags carry real N. On bermuda in October that’s the exact application this article exists to prevent. Check the N-P-K; if the first number isn’t at or near zero, it’s the wrong bag.

Don’t run your fescue program on your bermuda. Plenty of Southern yards have both. Fescue is fed in fall. Warm-season grass is fed in summer and never in fall. Same yard, opposite calendars.

Don’t chase September color with nitrogen. Foliar iron darkens existing leaf tissue without triggering new growth. Two limits: it only works while the grass is still actively growing, so it’s a September tool and not a November one, and it won’t fix a real nitrogen deficiency. When to Skip This Entirely

If your lawn is more than about 25% weeds, has bare patches, or has never had a soil test, fall potassium isn’t your move. Get a soil test from your state extension lab, usually $15 or less, and fix the foundation first.

What I Actually Run

Zoysia, Peachtree City, zone 8a.

Last nitrogen goes down around August 20 and that’s it until May. Late September I put down muriate of potash at 1.6 lb per 1,000 and water it in. When soil temperature starts declining through 70°F, usually the first week or two of October, I make the first large-patch fungicide application and a second one 28 days later, covered in the large patch article.

Then I stop. The lawn goes brown, I leave it alone, and I don’t touch it again until soil temps come back through 65°F in spring.

September is the hard part. The lawn is still green, still growing, and every instinct says feed it. Don’t.
