About Ryan, the Frugal Lawn Guy

I’m Ryan, and I write everything on this site. I take care of about 8,000 square feet of zoysia in Peachtree City, Georgia (roughly 4,000 in front, the rest out back), with a reel mower, a battery backpack sprayer, a soil thermometer and a dog.

Georgia is my fifth state. Before zoysia, I spent years on Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue and rye in New York, Massachusetts, Ohio and Tennessee. So when I write about cool-season lawns, it comes from years of doing it, not from reading about it. The longer version of how I got here is on the home page.

What I am, and what I’m not

I’m a homeowner, not a turf scientist and not a lawn service. I don’t sell products off my own shelf. What I bring is the cost math and the willingness to read the label, the extension bulletin and the price tag before I buy.

When something on this site comes from my own lawn, I say so. When it comes from research, I name the source: university extension services first (UGA, Clemson, NC State, UF/IFAS, Purdue, Penn State and the rest), then peer-reviewed studies. When I haven’t grown a grass myself, like St. Augustine or centipede, the article says that up front.

How I pick products

  • The active ingredient is the product. If a generic has the same chemistry as the brand, the generic is the pick. Where the brand is worth it, I explain why.
  • Three tiers. Most articles give a cheapest option, a less-effort option and a done-for-you option, because not everyone wants to own a sprayer.
  • The math is shown. Cost per pound of nitrogen, cost per 1,000 square feet, how many seasons a jug lasts. If a deal isn’t one, I’ll tell you.
  • Prices get dated. Prices change, so I note when I checked them. If you find one that’s off, tell me.

How this site makes money

Some links are affiliate links, mostly through Amazon Associates, DoMyOwn (via Awin), Lawn Life and VEVOR. If you buy through one, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It doesn’t decide the pick. When the option that pays me costs you meaningfully more than one that doesn’t, I point you to the cheaper one. If a company ever sends me a product for free, the review says so plainly.

Corrections and contact

If I got something wrong, a rate, a timing, a price, I want to know. Email me at [email protected] and I’ll fix it. More on getting in touch is on the contact page, and the privacy policy covers what this site collects.
