The Warm-Season Rationalist Program: A Full Year of Lawn Care for About $200
You want a lawn that looks noticeably better than your neighbors’. You do not want lawn care to become your personality. You’ll spread a bag, you’ll spray when it matters, but you are not going to track growing degree days or learn what a fungicide group rotation is.
That’s not a compromise. That’s a persona, and this program is built for it.
Here’s the frame. TruGreen quotes roughly $475 a year for their mid-tier plan on a 5,000 square foot lawn, and the national average customer pays closer to $1,000. The popular YouTube “basic plan” for warm-season grass runs about $556 a year in branded products. This program gets you the same chemistry both of them are using for $150 to $200 a year, in about six decisions, each one taking a Saturday morning or less.

Which one is you? (Read this first)
This is one of six FLG programs, and it’s the middle one on purpose. Quick check that you’re in the right place:
- The Minimalist wants the shortest possible path to “lawn looks fine.” Two or three product passes a year, nothing that requires a sprayer. If that’s you, the Minimalist program is coming; until then, this program still works if you just do Rounds 1, 2, and 6.
- The Rationalist (this program) wants a clearly better-than-average lawn with bounded effort. Owns a spreader, willing to own a sprayer, wants six good decisions instead of sixty.

One honest gate before anything else: this program assumes your lawn is basically healthy. If more than a quarter of what you’re looking at is weeds or bare dirt, fertilizer feeds the weeds before it feeds the grass. Take five minutes with Where Are You Now? first, fix the weed pressure, then come back. The program works when the lawn can respond to it.
This program is written for bermuda and zoysia. St. Augustine and centipede run most of the same calendar with different chemistry in two spots; I’ve flagged both below.
The Short Answer
Six rounds, triggered by soil temperature, not by the calendar on your wall. A $10 probe thermometer or the free soil temp lookup tells you when.

Year one, add the one-time equipment (sprayer if you don’t own one) and you’ll land around $200 to $250. Year two and beyond, the concentrates you bought are still mostly full, and the real annual number drops toward $100 to $150.
Round 0 — The soil test (winter, skip-proof)
Everything else on this list is guessing without it. Your state extension lab runs a full test for $0 to $15, and it tells you the two things that quietly cap your results: pH and phosphorus/potassium levels. If pH is off, nitrogen underperforms no matter whose bag it came from, and lime or sulfur is cheap.

Round 1 — Pre-emergent at 55°F (the highest-value pass of the year)
Crabgrass germinates when soil temperature holds around 55°F. Get prodiamine down before that and you’ve prevented 90% of the summer weed fight for about ten dollars of product. Miss it and you’ll spend five times that on post-emergents, plus the aggravation.
Generic Prodiamine 65 WDG is the pick. Same active ingredient as the Barricade that the lawn service trucks spray, same molecule as what’s in the orange bags at four times the price. One container is a multi-season supply. Use the split-rate approach: roughly a third of your annual rate now, the rest in Round 2. The crabgrass prevention article has rates and timing in detail.
No sprayer yet? Prodiamine also comes granular, and Round 1 is the round where a spreader-only reader can still win. But the WDG through a sprayer is cheaper per square foot and more even, which is why the sprayer pays for itself (more on that in the shopping list).
Round 2 — Green-up fertilizer + the second pre-emergent split (~65–70°F)
Wait for full green-up. Feeding a half-dormant warm-season lawn feeds weeds and risks pushing growth the roots can’t support yet. When the lawn is fully green and you’ve mowed actual growth twice, it’s ready.
The fertilizer question is where this program saves the most money, so here’s the tier honesty:
- Cheapest (what I’d do): straight urea (46-0-0) or ammonium sulfate (AMS) at about half a pound to a pound of nitrogen per thousand square feet. Urea runs about $1 per pound of nitrogen. This is the same nitrogen in every branded bag, without the bag’s marketing budget.
- Middle: a pre-blended slow-release NPK from DoMyOwn or the local co-op. Costs more per pound of N, easier to spread evenly, some insurance against burn if your calibration is casual.
- Done-for-you: Milorganite. Not the cheapest nitrogen you can buy, but it’s slow, forgiving, nearly impossible to burn with, and it delivers a respectable color. If you want exactly one fertilizer decision a year, this is a defensible one. The $556 YouTube plan is built on it; that’s most of why it costs $556.
Same pass: put down the second prodiamine split. Two birds, one Saturday.
Centipede note: centipede wants far less nitrogen than bermuda or zoysia. One pound of N for the whole year, total. More fertilizer makes centipede worse. The centipede guide covers it.
Round 3 — Feed again + kill the escapes (June)
Another round of nitrogen, then walk the lawn with a sprayer and handle whatever came up anyway:
- Crabgrass in bermuda/zoysia: quinclorac. Generic 75 DF with a shot of surfactant is the budget play; Drive XLR8 is the brand version. The crabgrass rescue article covers rates.
- Broadleaf weeds: Celsius WG is the warm-season safe answer, and a small bag lasts years of spot spraying.
- St. Augustine and centipede: quinclorac will hurt both. Atrazine is your rescue chemistry there, with temperature limits. Read this first.
Spot spraying is the Rationalist move, by the way. Blanket-spraying a mostly clean lawn is paying to treat grass that didn’t need it.
Rounds 4 and 5 — Steady summer feeding (July, August)
More of Round 2’s fertilizer decision, minus the pre-emergent. Half a pound to a pound of N per thousand per month while the grass is growing hard, and stop about six weeks before your first frost date so the lawn hardens off.
Summer is also where watering discipline does more than any product: deep and infrequent, an inch a week including rain, early morning. The watering guide has the math, and it’s free.
Round 6 — Fall pre-emergent + the fungicide question (soil falling through 70°F)
The fall prodiamine app prevents Poa annua and winter broadleaf weeds, and it’s the pass almost everyone skips and regrets in February. Same product you already own.
Now the honest add-on. If your lawn is zoysia and you’ve had large patch before (the brown circles that show up in fall), this is when prevention happens, because soil temperature falling through 70°F is the infection window, not when you see symptoms in spring. Options, tiered:
- Cheapest: generic azoxystrobin (Artavia 2SC) through the sprayer.
- Done-for-you: Scotts DiseaseEx granular through the spreader. Same active ingredient, no mixing, costs more per square foot. A perfectly good Rationalist answer.
No disease history? Skip it entirely and save the money. Fungicide as insurance on a lawn that’s never had the disease is how the branded programs pad their round count. The large patch article tells you how to know which camp you’re in.

Everything above, in one place. Chemistry follows the “generic wins” rule; equipment follows the “mid-tier wins” rule. That’s not inconsistent, that’s knowing where the markup is real.

Amortize the equipment over the decade it lasts and the program’s true annual run rate sits in the $150 to $200 range for a typical lawn, less after year one.

The service is spraying prodiamine, urea-based fertilizer, and the same post-emergent families you just read about. You’re not buying different chemistry when you pay them. You’re buying the truck, and here’s the full breakdown if you want the receipts.
Against the $556 plan, the honest difference: we swapped Milorganite for urea (same nitrogen result, roughly $200 less), and we cut the biostimulant bottles (RGS, humic, liquid aeration). Those aren’t scams, but they’re nice-to-haves with modest evidence, and nice-to-haves are exactly what a Rationalist cuts first. If you love Milorganite, keep it; you’ll still come in under $400.
My actual program (why you can trust the shape of this)
My lawn is zoysia in Peachtree City, Georgia. What I run on it is this program with the nerd knobs added: the prodiamine splits are the same, the soil test cadence is the same, but I mix my own liquid fertilizer, rotate two fungicide groups every fall because my lawn has large patch history, and run a growth regulator through a 4-gallon VEVOR battery backpack because I enjoy this more than a sane person should.
The point is the skeleton. Strip the PGR, the foliar iron, and the rotation logic off my program and what’s left is exactly what’s on this page. Nothing here is theoretical; it’s the load-bearing part of a program that runs on a real lawn eleven months a year.
What Not to Do
- Don’t buy weed and feed. The pre-emergent timing and the fertilizer timing are different windows. One bag can’t be right for both, so it’s wrong for at least one, and you paid a premium for it.
- Don’t fertilize before full green-up. You’ll feed winter weeds and stress the wake-up.
- Don’t blanket-spray a clean lawn. Spot treat. It’s cheaper and it’s better for the turf.
- Don’t skip the fall pre-emergent. February-you will find out why.
- Don’t run this program on a Tier C lawn. Triage first. Start here.
- Don’t water every evening for 15 minutes. That’s a fungus recipe. Deep, infrequent, morning.
